Ear Surgery
Large or protruding ears can be a cause of great self-consciousness, especially for children and teens. Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is a surgical procedure that can reduce the size of the ears, pinning them closer to the head. Ear surgery can make a dramatic improvement in a person’s appearance, easing social tensions and boosting self-esteem.
Ear surgery is most often performed on children over the age of five. Younger children should postpone having otoplasty until their ears have almost grown to adult size. Teenagers and adults can have ear surgery as well.
Because the otoplasty procedure is tailored to suit the needs of each individual patient, the details of the surgery may vary. Protruding ears may be “pinned back,” while ears that are disproportionate to the patient’s facial features may be reshaped or made smaller.
Most otoplasty patients report a high level of satisfaction with their results. Some asymmetry and slight differences in size are normal and mimic the natural appearance of people’s ears. Our doctors can help patients (or their parents) prepare for surgery and can answer any questions they may have.
